This plant is called Puoch in Khmer language, and
its common English name is Downy rose myrtle (a scientific name:
Rhodomyrtus tomentosa). It grew mostly in the mountain fields, along the
roadsides and the plateaus.
It always bears ripe fruits in the period of January and
February every year, and its fruits are eatable. The local people who go into
the jungle, always pick these fruits to eat while they are thirsty. These
fruits are very sweet. The locals say the fruits are good for our blood tonic,
neurasthenia and fatigue. This plant is not only edible for its fruits,
but according to the book of Cambodian medicinal plants of Ministry of Health
which is published by National Center of Traditional Medicin shows that the
roots of this plant can be used to cure for some diseases such as hepatitis,
dysentery, numbness, lower back pain and metrorrhagia. To do this you need to
wash the root and dry it. After that chop the root and boil it in water. Use
about 15 to 30 gram per day. All in all, this plant has lots of benefit. It is
also possible to make jam out of the fruits. By just pounding the fruits until
it melts, then cook it with brown sugar, stir it with a spoon, and add a little
water until it becomes sticky. This jam is famous for international tourists.
